Initial treatment for a concussion is simple bed rest, both mental and physical, which allows the brain time to heal. Sometimes the patient is asked to stay in a darkened room with No music, NoTV, No video games, No visitors, No phone calls, No texting, No reading. Think of it like a cocoon or “awake” coma. They can sleep as much as they would like with only trips to the bathroom. Sometimes as much as 30 days is prescribed! While not easy, many patients report not feeling well anyway and just want to sleep, so the first week can go pretty smooth.

Every child’s injury and recovery is unique, but with guidance from a good doctor, your child can slowly return to school and to play following a concussion.
